The SKF 6317-2Z shielded deep groove ball bearing provides robust rotational support for larger shafts in industrial power transmission and processing equipment. Its 85mm bore, 180mm outside diameter and 41mm width give it a substantial cross-section for applications involving sustained radial loading. The single row deep groove raceway design also accommodates axial forces in either direction, within the bearing's rated limits. As an SKF Explorer bearing, the 6317-2Z has a basic dynamic load rating of 140kN and a basic static load rating of 96.5kN. These values support bearing-life calculations and the assessment of operating loads. Its comparatively large dimensions make proper housing support, shaft alignment and handling during installation particularly important.
The 2Z designation identifies non-contact metal shields fitted on both sides of the bearing. Unlike the rubber contact seals used on 2RS1 versions, these shields do not rub against the inner ring, reducing seal friction while offering protection against larger particles and helping retain factory grease. They are not intended to provide the same resistance to water or fine contamination as contact seals. SKF specifies a 4,000rpm limiting speed for the 6317-2Z, with actual operating suitability dependent on load, temperature and lubrication conditions. Normal (CN) radial internal clearance should be considered alongside interference fits and thermal expansion, particularly in larger machinery. A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements, and the bearing weighs approximately 4.4kg. For replacements, verify both the 2Z shield configuration and clearance specification before installation.
