The SKF 6217-2Z double-shielded deep groove ball bearing is designed for large rotating assemblies where low friction, consistent shaft guidance and substantial radial load capacity are essential. Its 85mm bore, 150mm outside diameter and 28mm width place it within SKF's 62 series, offering a more compact radial section than the corresponding 6317 bearing. The single row deep groove raceways accommodate predominantly radial loading together with axial forces in either direction, subject to the bearing's operating limits. SKF specifications give a basic dynamic load rating of 87.1kN and a basic static load rating of 64kN, making these values useful when calculating bearing life and checking the effects of continuous or intermittent loading.
The 2Z suffix identifies steel shields on both sides rather than contacting rubber seals. These non-contact shields help retain factory grease and restrict the entry of larger airborne particles while producing less seal friction than a comparable 2RS1 design. However, they do not offer the same protection against water and fine contamination, so the operating environment should guide the choice between shielded and sealed versions. SKF specifies a 4,500rpm limiting speed and 9,000rpm reference speed, which represent different operating criteria rather than interchangeable maximum speeds. The bearing features normal (CN) radial internal clearance and a sheet steel cage. Before installation, check shaft and housing tolerances, operating temperature and lubrication conditions, particularly where interference fits may reduce internal clearance.
