The SKF 6209-2Z double-shielded deep groove ball bearing is engineered for rotating machinery where low friction, consistent running performance and grease retention are important. Its 45mm bore, 85mm outside diameter and 19mm width provide a standardised mounting arrangement for medium-duty shaft supports. The SKF Explorer design has a basic dynamic load rating of 35.1kN and a basic static load rating of 21.6kN, supporting bearing-life calculations and appropriate selection for radial and combined loading. Its single row deep groove raceways accommodate radial forces and axial forces in either direction within the rated operating limits. Compared with the larger 6309 series, the 6209 offers a smaller outside diameter and narrower section, making it a practical choice where available housing space is restricted.
The 2Z suffix identifies a steel shield on each side, forming a non-contact protective arrangement rather than the rubber contact seals used on the 6209-2RS1. The shields help retain the factory grease and reduce the entry of larger contaminants without adding significant seal friction. This makes the bearing particularly suitable for relatively clean motor housings, fans and enclosed drive units, but less appropriate where direct water spray or heavy contamination is expected. SKF specifies a 17,000rpm reference speed and an 8,500rpm limiting speed; these are different catalogue parameters and should not be treated as interchangeable operating guarantees. The bearing has normal (CN) radial internal clearance and a sheet metal cage. When replacing an existing bearing, verify the 2Z suffix and required clearance, especially if the original equipment specifies C3.
